Do you know what brand you have? Some systems have a backwash valve connected to the membrane. If so it would be connected on top of the membrane and you would run it for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. If your system does not what the instructions is telling you is to run the system until the tank runs out. Then let it fill back up. What you’re trying to do is to flush any loose carbon from the carbon filters, it looks bad and will not hurt you.

Changing the three pre filters on the APEC RO-45 reverse osmosis filtration system. A sediment pre filter and two 5 micron charcoal filters that remove chlorine and VOC compounds. A little web research on part numbers reveals the filters are actually made by GE.

Shows the condition of filters after mild neglect as compared to new as well as system restart and cursory water quality testing using supplied  TDS tester.

Great little system. 100% eliminated the chlorine taste and supposedly does away with 97% of the municipality added fluoride as well as other nasties. Filtered water is used for 100% drinking water, cooking and has a secondary line to refrigerator ice maker.
