The Yellow panthers

31 March, 2007 (11:30) | videos

I like this a lot! Dated, but this still holds up very well I think. From Fcked Gaijin.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono introduce a very earnest duo called Yellow Pearl during their television interview with Mike Douglas. Joanne Nobuko Miyamoto got involved in politics when she worked on a documentary about the Black Panthers and decided that the Asian American community needed a similar organization. Chris Kando Iijima’s father fought with the all-Nisei 442nd Regiment in WWII while his mother was a progressive activist. The two linked up with “Charlie” Chin and recorded A Grain of Sand which was the first folk music expression of Asian American culture. The songs haven’t dated particularly well but the record’s status means it is sold today at the Smithsonian. Miyamoto remains active in theatre and dance in L.A. while Iijima, who went on to work as a law professor, died just over a year ago after an illness.
